Week 2 - Decision-making process

Dear students,

As you know, our course will be implemented for 12 weeks this semester starting this week. Indeed, today we had our first activity. In our work, we will combine physical and online (both synchronous and asynchronous activities). Week 2 will be implemented online asynchronously because I have to participate in the Faculty council session at the same time as our teaching hours (March 16, 12-14).  The content of Week 2 is related to the decision-making process.

Today, you were able to see the steps of the decision-making process. However, this is not the only approach to analyzing the decision making process through detailed steps. There are many other approaches. The one is called the "integral decision-making approach". The steps are the following:

  1. Preparation of the decision
    • Identification of the problem
    • Setting goals (tasks definition)
    • Analysis of the current state
    • Alternatives (identification and/or creation)
    • Alternatives’ evaluation
  2. Decision making
  3. Implementation of the decision
  4. Implementation monitoring and control

As you can see, we can find the relationship between this approach and the one we saw in the lectures. Basically, the steps among many approaches are similar, except different approaches' authors put different accents on some steps: in the integral approach, the accent is placed more on the first steps of the decision-making process.

Your assignment for week 2 is a group activity, and groups are formed by the Moodle system randomly. See groups and group members at the end of this post.

  1. In a group, each member should select a different decision-making problem and describe and demonstrate what is to be implemented in different steps of the decision-making process with respect to the selected decision-making problems (like we did today when explaining the buying a cellphone problem).
  2. As a group, implement the mapping of the steps from the decision-making process from L1 and the integral decision-making approach (it means connecting steps from two approaches that are related to the same activity). In addition, explain why some step(s) from one approach is not mapped to any step from another approach.
  3. Each group should analyze another approach for the decision-making process, describe its steps, and demonstrate what is to be implemented in different steps of the selected approach in the case of a newly selected decision-making problem (which is different than in the previous assignments):
  4. Like in item 2, implement the mapping of your group approach from item 3 and two previous approaches (today's lecture and integral approaches).

Upload your group results at this link: https://elfarchive2223.foi.hr/mod/assign/view.php?id=105552. The deadline is March 17, noon.

On Thursday, March 16th, 12-14, Room 8 is reserved for our teaching hours, so, if not anytime else, you can gather there in that time and implement the homework. Two hours is enough time to implement the homework.

In case of any questions, you can contact me.

Best regards,

Nikola
